Assam Govt. to provide One Tola Gold to Brides: Assam CM to Launch 'Arundhati' Scheme on Sept 24

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal would formally launch the ‘Arundhati’ scheme on September 24 by providing the price of one tola (10 grams) gold i.e. Rs 40,000 each to beneficiaries of the scheme.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the scheme while presenting the Budget 2019-2020. Under the scheme, the government will gift the bride 10 grams of gold, if she has studied at least up to Class 10 and her marriage is registered.

The Chief Minister also stressed on the need to create adequate awareness about ‘Arundhati’ scheme so that intended beneficiaries come forward to take advantage of the scheme.

The Assam government had allocated Rs 300 crore for the gold scheme.

Sarma had said that gold scheme is aimed to empower women and promote marriage registrations while preventing under-age marriages in Assam.

To avail the benefits of the scheme, the annual income of the bride and her father should not be more than Rs 5 lakh per year.

The bride and groom should have attained the legal age of 18 years and 21 years respectively at the time of registration of the marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

The applicant girl can avail of this benefit only for her first marriage.
