The campaign theme for international women’s day is #breakthebis. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move forward, knowing bias exists is not enough action is needed to level the playing field.
International women’s day is observed on 8th of march every year to celebrate the cultural, political and socioeconomic achievements of women. It is also a focal point in the women’s rights, including gender equality, reproductive rights and violence and abuse against women.
Women’s day celebrate every essence of a women all over the world, this day marks the importance of why women should be treated equally without any bias, it signifies the rights of women to get equal opportunity, respect and the right to be vocal about their needs. Women have always been suppressed by some kind of force that restricted their choices and freedom but as time passes women are now more vocal of their choices and are rising up to their full potential and are now more active in every aspect, but still in today’s world somewhere the women of the society have to face the obstacles for the choices they made, the question still arises for the women. Fighting the odds and breaking the stereotypes and hustling for their dreams today’s women are proving themselves every time.
HISTORY:
International women’s day was first officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, the first-time women’s day was in the US on 28 February 1909. This day honored the 1908 garment worker’s strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions,women’s movement in Russia held on 23 February in 1917. Since Russia was not using the Gregorian calendar, 23 February in Russia corresponded to march 8 in other European countries.
In India, National Women’s Day is celebrated on 13 February to celebrate the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, who was a pioneer in advocating for women’s rights. A political leader ad a poet as well, she is known as the nightingale of India.
THEME 2022:
The theme for 2022 is ‘GENDER EQUALITY TODAY FOR A SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW’ and call for climate action for women, by women.Women are increasingly being more vulnerable to climate change than men, as they constitute the majority of the world’s poor and are more dependent on natural resources which climate change threatens the most.
COLORS SYMBOLIZE WOMEN’S DAY:
Purple, green and white are the colors of international women’s day. Purple signifies justice and dignity. Green symbolizes hope and white represent purity (although a controversial concept).The colors originated from the women’s social and political union (WSPU)in UK in 1908.
NEED OF AN INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY:
According to the world economic forum, unfortunately non of us will see gender equality in our lifetime and nor likely will many of our children. Gender equality will not be attained for almost a century. There is a lot to do and we can play a part.-Deborika Bhattacharjee,
