The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to a ₹22,864 crore initiative to construct a 166.8 km, four-lane, access-controlled greenfield highway connecting Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya with Panchgram in Assam. This project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).

Of the total length, 144.80 km will lie within Meghalaya, while 22.00 km will pass through Assam. As part of National Highway No. 06, this expressway is expected to enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth.

The new route will cut down the distance and travel time between Guwahati and Silchar, improving connectivity to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam's Barak Valley. This, in turn, is set to streamline logistics and reduce transportation expenses across the region.

Traversing key areas known for cement and coal production, the highway will bolster Meghalaya’s industrial sector. Additionally, it will enhance tourist access to destinations across the Northeast, benefiting visitors flying into Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar.

The corridor will relieve traffic on the existing NH-06 and seamlessly connect with major highways such as NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37. It will run through significant districts including Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West and East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, and Cachar in Assam.

Several key towns—Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Phramer, Khliehriat, Ratacherra, Umkiang, and Kalain—will gain improved connectivity, easing travel between cities.

Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan and supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, this vital infrastructure project aims to strengthen transport networks, create job opportunities, and drive socio-economic progress across five Northeastern states: Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
