Two Mahouts Arrested Amid Public Outrage after Pet Elephant Brutally Beaten in Assam's Nagaon

The incident came to light after a video surfaced online, showing the elephant being subjected to severe physical abuse by its handlers. The footage quickly went viral, prompting immediate action from local authorities. The two mahouts involved were arrested under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

The elephant, identified as a 19-year-old female named Joymala, was reportedly brought to Nagaon from Tamil Nadu, where she had previously been part of temple rituals. In Tamil Nadu, Joymala had been subjected to similar abuse, leading to the arrest of her mahout and his assistant after a video of the beating went viral in 2021

Animal rights activists have long raised concerns about the treatment of captive elephants, especially those used in religious and cultural events. The practice of "katti adikkal," a ritualistic beating to break the animal's spirit, has been widely condemned by conservationists

The Assam Forest Department has initiated a thorough investigation into the incident and is considering relocating Joymala to a rehabilitation center where she can receive proper care. Officials have also called for stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws to prevent such incidents in the future.

This incident has reignited the debate over the use of elephants in religious and cultural practices, with many calling for a complete ban on the use of wild animals in such events. The public outcry underscores the need for greater awareness and stricter regulations to ensure the welfare of these majestic creatures.
