ODI Careers Safe If They Perform, Says Sourav Ganguly on Rohit and Kohli

Bongaigaon Times: Sports : 11th August 2025 : Former India captain Sourav Ganguly feels there’s no reason for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to walk away from One-Day Internationals as long as they are still producing match-winning performances.

ODI Careers Safe If They Perform, Says Saurav Ganguly on Rohit and Kohli

He said that with the kind of numbers both have in the 50-over format, they remain among India’s most valuable players. For him, the only real test for extending a career is whether a player is still delivering results, not what people speculate in the media.

At an event hosted by AWL Agri Business Ltd, Ganguly praised the pair for their consistency and match temperament in white-ball cricket, saying they have been among the best in the business for years. His remarks came after reports suggested that the ODI series in Australia this October could be the last time fans see them in this format. Ganguly, however, explained that he hadn’t heard anything official about such a decision and added that as long as they’re fit and performing, there’s no reason to stop. He pointed out that both players have built outstanding one-day careers that would be hard to replace.

India’s Australia tour begins on October 19, with matches in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney, followed by three ODIs against South Africa at home in December. Some believe this might be the last ODI series for the two veterans, particularly since they have already stepped away from T20Is and Test cricket. Neither player has yet confirmed whether they plan to stay on until the 2027 World Cup, so their long-term intentions remain a mystery.

Turning to the upcoming T20 Asia Cup in Dubai, starting September 9, Ganguly expressed confidence in India’s chances. He said the team has benefited from a break after the IPL and a gruelling five-Test series in England, and will arrive in Dubai refreshed. According to him, India are a formidable side in all formats, but especially dangerous in white-ball cricket, and defeating them on the batting-friendly Dubai pitches will be no easy task.

Ganguly also spoke warmly about Shubman Gill’s leadership as India’s Test captain, saying he has the qualities to guide the team for years to come. On his own plans, the former BCCI president confirmed that he is open to returning to cricket administration and would be willing to run for the CAB president’s position if members supported him.

In the end, Ganguly’s message was clear, careers in cricket should be shaped by performance on the field, not by speculation off it.
