Bidyapur Development Block Pays Tribute to Bhupen Hazarika with Special Commemorative Programme

Bongaigaon, September 8, 2026: Paying tribute to the enduring legacy of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his birth centenary, the Bidyapur Development Block in Bongaigaon district organised a special ‘Remembering Bhupen Hazarika’ programme at the Block office premises.

The event brought together eminent personalities, public representatives and literary figures to honour the legendary artist’s unparalleled contribution to Assamese culture and society.

A bust of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was unveiled by Dr. Tarani Deka, Vice-Chancellor of Bongaigaon University, as part of the centenary observance.

The newly constructed boundary wall and main entrance gate of the Bidyapur Development Block premises were also inaugurated by Phani Bhushan Choudhury, MP of Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency.

The programme began with a rendition of Dr. Hazarika’s iconic song ‘Manuhe Manuhor Babe’, setting the tone for an evening dedicated to his timeless musical and cultural legacy. Bidyapur Development Block Officer Nabaratna Patowary delivered the welcome address.

Noted playwright and Head of the Department of English at Birjhora Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Bhaskar Shil, attended the programme as the distinguished guest and chief speaker. Poet-speakers Dr. Binay Majumdar and Shantanu Sharma also participated in the commemorative event.

Mridula Singha, President of Bongaigaon Zilla Parishad, and Ujjal Kanti Ray, President of the Bongaigaon District BJP, were among the distinguished guests who addressed the gathering and spoke about Dr. Hazarika’s lasting influence on Assamese society and culture.

The programme was anchored by Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar-winning poet Pratim Baruah, who conducted the proceedings from beginning to end.

The commemorative event concluded with a rendition of Dr. Hazarika’s immortal creation ‘Ami Ekekhan Naore Jatri’, bringing the programme to a fitting close while celebrating the life, work and enduring legacy of one of Assam’s most revered cultural icons.
