Street Library Turns Out To Be A Crowd-Puller in Arunachal Pradesh

The street library has been set up at Nirjuli in Papum Pare district in Arunachal Pradesh and has become quite popular among the residents.

Street libraries are not a new thing in the Northeast. Such libraries run on trust and loads of enthusiasm.

Taking a pick from the famous street libraries of Mizoram, Ngurang Meena opened ‘Self Help library’ in Arunachal Pradesh to promote reading culture among the youths driven by technology.

The street library has been set up at Nirjuli in Papum Pare district and has become quite popular among the residents.

In the first-of-its-kind library in Arunachal Pradesh, there are just racks stacked with books and a couple of wooden benches for the readers. 

Meena, who is the also founder of 'Ngurang Learning Institute', said that reading has become quite an essential part of our bickering lives today.

“Reading stimulates cognitive skills and boosts the analytical thinking of a young mind. Reading transports us into a new world altogether. It gives wings to our imagination,” Meena said.

She also lamented that book reading has become a distant past.

“With the advent of smartphones, reading books has become a thing of the past. Hence with the ‘Self Help library’, I want to encourage reading among the children, youth,” she further said.

The colorful photographs of the street library have now gone viral on social media with netizens hailing the initiative of Meena.
