The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Draupadi Murmu becomes the 15th President of India. The counting of votes for the president election 2022 was held at parliament house. The contest was between BJP-led NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu and joint opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha.

Draupadi Murmu secured 2824 first preference votes-value of which is 6,76,803, while her rival Yashwant Sinha bagged 1,877 first preference votes- value of which is 3,80,177 votes, Returning Officer P.C. Mody said announcing Draupadi Murmu as the 15th President of India.

DRAUPADI MURMU BIOGRAPHY:

Draupadi Murmu was born in 20th June 1958 (64year as on 2022). She was born in a Santhali tribe in Uparbeda village of Mayurbhanj in Odisha. Draupadi Murmu's father and grandfather were heads of panchayat raj. She did her schooling from Unit ii High School and graduated in bachelor of arts from Rama Devi College (now university).

She was married to Shyam Charan Murmu and the couple had two sons and a daughter. However, Murmu has suffered multiple tragedies in her personal life. Her husband, Shyam Charan Murmu had passed away following a cardiac arrest. Later in 2009, one of her sons died under mysterious circumstances. Just three years later, in 2012, her second son died in a road accident.

TEACHING CAREER:

Draupadi Murmu started teaching before entering politics. She worked as an assistant professor at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Institute in Rairangpur. She was appointed as a junior assistant in Irrigation and Power Department from 1979 to 1983 in the Odisha government

POLITICAL CAREER:

In 1997, she joins the BHARATIYA JANATA PARTY(BJP), Draupadi Murmu was elected as the councilor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. In 2000, she became the chairperson of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat, she served as the national vice president of BJP Scheduled Tribes Morcha.

Form March 2000 to August 2000 she was the minister of the state with independent charge for commerce and transportation and she was also the in charge for fisheries and animal resource development from august 2000 to 2004. She had served twice as an MLA representing Rairangpur Assembly seat and once as a minister in Odisha, before being sworn in as the Governor of Jharkhand on May 18, 2015 created a record of being the first governor to complete a full term and then served an extra year before exiting the office in 2021.

In June 2022, she was nominated by BJPs NDA candidate for the president of India for 2022 election.
