KOLKATA | 15th May 2026 | Three senior IPS officers have been suspended by the West Bengal Government in connection with the RG Kar Medical College case that had sparked massive outrage across the country.

The suspended officers are former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, former Deputy Commissioner (Central) Indira Mukherjee, and former Deputy Commissioner (North) Avishek Gupta. They have been accused of alleged dereliction of duty, attempting to offer money to the victim’s parents, and holding media briefings without government authorization.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari informed the media that the state government has ordered a departmental inquiry against the three officers.

The case is related to the horrific rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024, an incident that triggered widespread protests across West Bengal, the country, and even abroad.

The victim’s parents have continuously fought for justice since the incident. In a significant development, the victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath, was later elected to the newly formed West Bengal Assembly from the Panihati constituency.

The RG Kar incident sparked massive protests across the state, country, and abroad. During these protests, the role of the state government under Mamata Banerjee and the conduct of the three suspended IPS officers were heavily scrutinized by the public and various sectors of society.
