World Millets Federation Takes Forward August 30 as World Millets Day, Calls for Global Action

Hyderabad, August 29, 2026: The World Millets Federation (WMF) has taken forward the proposal to observe August 30 every year as World Millets Day, aiming to turn the occasion into a global movement for millet education, awareness, collaboration and meaningful action.

The initiative was originally proposed by Millets.News – Millets International Media Portal, with the objective of continuing the momentum generated by the International Year of Millets 2023. The newly formed World Millets Federation is now working to advance the initiative internationally.
Global Federation of Millet Leaders

The World Millets Federation has been established as an international platform bringing together experts and stakeholders from across the global millet ecosystem. Its members include scientists, researchers, university professors, nutrition and health professionals, agricultural experts, manufacturers and entrepreneurs.

The Federation aims to strengthen collaboration in areas including research, nutrition, sustainable agriculture, innovation, entrepreneurship and farmer development.

According to Prasanna Srinivas Sarakadam, Founding Member of the World Millets Federation and Editor of the Millets International Media Portal, the International Year of Millets helped create worldwide attention, but continued efforts are needed.

He said World Millets Day could serve as an annual occasion for the global millet community to come together to educate, collaborate, review progress and take meaningful action.
Focus on Meaningful Participation

Organisations have already begun responding to the call through millet-focused programmes, including awareness campaigns, seminars, community initiatives and nutrition programmes.

The WMF is encouraging organisations and individuals across countries to participate through activities such as farmer programmes, millet meals, research discussions, university seminars, nutrition awareness programmes, processing demonstrations, school activities, innovation showcases and media campaigns.

The Federation said the size of an activity is not important, but rather its purpose and impact. It wants August 30 to evolve beyond a ceremonial observance and become an annual platform for action and accountability in areas such as farmers, nutrition, research, education, sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, markets and public awareness.
Global Call for Participation

The World Millets Federation has invited governments, universities, research institutions, scientists, farmer organisations, nutrition professionals, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, hospitals, schools, civil-society organisations, media organisations and individuals to mark August 30 through meaningful millet-related activities.

The Federation has called for continued participation to strengthen the movement year after year.
