Rongali or Bohag Bihu: The biggest festival of Assam

Bohag bihu gets its name from the first month of Assamese calendar also known as Rongali Bihu, the word Rong means ‘happiness’, celebration and fun.

Rongali or Bohag Bihu is the festival signifying the time of harvest season. The festival marks the beginning of Bohag or the Assamese New year, it is celebrated all across assam. The festival coincides with other spring festival like Baisakhi, Vishu, Puthandu, Jur sital etc. It is the first day of Hindu solar calendar and is celebrated widely among the farmer community.

CELEBRATION OF BOHAG BIHU:

On this day people get early in the morning and apply haldi and paste of urad dal to cleanse off and women apply “jetuka” (mehndi or henna) on their hands and craft exquisite designs, it is the primary attraction of this festival.

Traditional pat or muga silk or cotton mekhela chadors are worn by the ladies, parents give their children new outfits during this time. As a sign of affection and respect, GAMOCH, the traditional Assamese towel, also known as Bihuwaan, is exchanged among the people.

This Bihu is all about partying, wearing new outfits, and ringing in the new year with song, dancing and cultural performances. Assam celebrates Bihu in a grand way, various cultural programs are hosted across Assam. Hundreds of people turn up to enjoy cultural events.

Bihu cuisines includes a range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes like duck meat cooked with white gourd, mutton, chicken, hog and fish delicacies. The most important dish is masor tenga or sour fish curry composed of tomato and lemon juice, or thekera tenga.

PHASES OF RONGALI BIHU:

The first day of Rongali bihu is called Goru bihu , which is dedicated to cattle’s, on this day farmers take their cows to a pond to give them a bath before applying haldi. cows are then decorated with plant twings. The second day known as manuh bihu marks the beginning of the new year, the third day known as gosai bihu ,is the day of worship , whereas on the fourth day, kutum bihu, people visit their relatives.

Senehi bihu is reserved for lovers who exchanged gifts called “bihuwan”. The festival culminates with mela bihu when people organize fairs.
