Sleep is essential for a human being to maintain the delicate balance of health necessary for its very existence and survival. It is our fundamental right to sleep as mentioned Under Article 21. i.e., the Right to life and personal liberty.

Do you know? We all have right to sleep!

As we all know that sleeping is one of the essential ingredients of a healthy human existence. Sleep plays an important role in human physical health. It involves in healing and maintenance of the human body. If a human doesn’t take a proper sleep it may lead to many physical and mental disease. therefore, sleep is a basic and fundamental need in our life.

In this case, the Supreme Court first time discussed the issue of the right to sleep as a fundamental right. It was held that if a person is deprived of sleep, the effect thereof is treated to be torturous. The Court termed it as a basic human right.

According to Article 21, nobody shall be deprived of his life and private liberty except by a procedure established by law. This right is the most fundamental of all rights. The meaning and purpose of this article are interpreted according to the need of society. According to Article 21, the Right to life has a very broad meaning. The right to life has various aspects such as the Right to privacy, the right to shelter, the right to health, and also the Right to sleep.
 
Getting adequate sleep is of utmost necessity in today's world. A sleep-deprived person suffers from various physical as well as mental issues, which can create mental stress, deficiency in working capacity, and many other sorts of other difficulties that are in today's terms we call " Lifestyle Diseases ". A large number of the population is suffering from lifestyle diseases which include Diabetes, hormonal imbalance, Thyrodism, PCOD, and many more. In today's world people often uses various kinds of substances to keep them awake. The most popular of them in consuming Caffeine, while sipping caffeine instantly give us the energy to perform work but it has other limitation that people often ignore.

Dr. Alexandros N. Vgontzas, says:
“If you lose one night of sleep, your mental performance is like you’re legally drunk, if you don’t sleep well, you can develop something almost like a prediabetic condition — an ineffective use of insulin Stress leads to lack of sleep. Lack of sleep leads to increased stress. Stress can lead to overeating. People eat to reduce anxiety. We’ve seen this effect even in people who reduce their sleep from eight hours to six. You develop a condition of low-grade inflammation, and we know that low-grade inflammation is a pathway to cardiovascular problems and decreased longevity”.

The government of India has introduced many measures for the people of the country so that citizens can have sound sleep after a tiring day at work. But in the private sector where ofter employees have to serve the night and the graveyard shift. The concern remains high about the health aspect of the youth of India. This can often be called one of the elements of the raising number of mental health issues in the country.
